Lemna Minor (Water Lentil) Common name: Water lentils Scientific name: Lemna Minor Family: Lemnaceae Origin: Cosmopolitan Description: The Lemna Minor, commonly known as Water Lentil, is a small floating plant with oval, flat leaves. The leaves are attached by a small bunch of roots. The color of the leaves is green, varying in intensity depending on the lighting received. Spread way: From each small plant new leaves are born, which after developing roots separate, facilitating their rapid spread. Lighting needs: Medium - High Maintenance needs: Very scarce. Normally, the nutrients present in aquarium water are sufficient. The main challenge is its rapid growth and spread. Temperature: Withstands a very wide range, between 5 and 30ºC Water conditions: Water with a pH range between 5 and 9, and soft to hard Substrate type: No substrate required as it is a floating plant Aquarium area: Upper, floating on water surface Difficulty: Very easy. A simple floating leaf can cover the surface of the aquarium in a short time. Remarks: The Lemna Minor is excellent for creating more shaded or dimly lit areas in the aquarium, providing shelter for fry between its roots. Prefer areas with little or no water flow. It is a very fast growing plant, suitable for reducing the level of nitrates in water. Its long roots indicate a high level of nitrates. Goldfish usually enjoy this plant and consume it quickly. In many places it is considered a pest due to its rapid growth. It is very useful for sifting light into tropical tanks that require soft lighting.
